Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Goodrich Apartments’ history dating back to the 1880s, is reflected in the high ceilings, restored woodwork, and spacious rooms. Located in downtown Grand Rapids’ Heartside neighborhood, the two renovated historic buildings (The De la Mater and The Schuchardt Buildings) include 14 one and two-bedroom affordable apartments. A Storefront Past, A Home Today

The Goodrich Apartments are made up of two buildings constructed around 1890: the DeLaMater Building at 333 South Division Avenue and the Schuchardt Building at 339 South Division Avenue. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Before becoming fully residential, the buildings had storefronts and neighborhood businesses on the ground floor, with boarding rooms or homes above. The Schuchardt Building, for example, housed a meat market. As the Heartside neighborhood changed, some storefronts became vacant or underused.

Dwelling Place acquired and renovated the buildings to preserve affordable housing in the neighborhood. A $3.1 million modernization project in 2010 updated appliances, cabinets and flooring while retaining historic details. Today, the Goodrich offers 14 affordable one- and two-bedroom apartments, with features including high ceilings, spacious layouts, original woodwork and top-floor skylights.
